Best Spam Filters

Post on Jul 31st 2008

Spam filters have now become an integral part of Internet usage. Offering easy and user friendly methods of keeping unwanted mails away from the computer, these filters have become immensely popular amongst the users of World Wide Web.

Content-based filters are generally considered the best in terms of performance. Working on the simple principle of analyzing the message subject, headers and content and looking for indicators of spam, content-based spam filters block spam messages from entering the mailbox as soon as they encounter some suspicious words.

Some of the most commonly used spam filters are eXpurgate, Cloudmark, SpamPal, MailWasher Pro, Spamihilator, K9, Spam Bully, Spam Interceptor and many more.

Identifying and establishing a spam filter is not an easy task, as each spam filter has unique features. Moreover, this technology undergoes constant updates, and in such a dynamic scenario determining the best is not easy.

However, there are certain basic characteristics which a spam filter must have in order to function effectively. An ideal spam filter should be a combination of various filtering techniques, like content based, blacklisted/ whitelisted and volume-based filtration. It should not slow down the pace of the system. Also, no additional software or hardware support should be required, and it should be extremely user-friendly. Also, it should be flexible and adaptable to the filtering technique most suitable for the user, while requiring minimal maintenance

Spam filters certainly offer an extremely user-oriented and easy technique of blocking spam. However, apart from relying on technology, one may avoid unsolicited mails by practicing some common Internet safety tips. Apart from identifying private and professional mailing lists and operating them from separate mail accounts, one also needs to follow the professional ethics of using client-based email, as this is generally the worst hit by spam.

Every client-based email service provider, like Microsoft, issues certain guidelines for using the service. Adhering to these may bring down the number of spam mails incredibly. Following ethical Internet practices cautiously and using spam filters can offer a long-lasting and effective remedy to block spam messages.

Consciousness On Internet Phishing Practices

Post on Jul 31st 2008

In the same way that the Internet has totally revolutionalized the age of online transactions, the security breaches caused by phishing practices has become rampant as well, making most people rant for anti-phishing techniques and standards to put a halt to this criminal activity that is making the reliability of online transacting questionable. Phishing has caused a wider concern of building hesitations and apprehensions on trusting online transactions, especially the phishing techniques where bank or financial data is required to consummate various transactions. Phishing has become the main concern by consumer which becomes an issue on refraining from using their credit card information for such offers from sites that would usually assume identities of online organizations such as Paypal or AOL.

It is very important to educate people about these phishing activities. There are various phishing techniques which cover e-mails to online surfing by giving web addresses that are supposedly reliable, but sometimes invisible to the human eye. People are conned through phishing techniques by making them believe that they are dealing with authentic organizations, only to find out that it is the exact opposite. Financial losses and privacy invasion from secure email accounts are the most common forms of phishing conflicts, totally rendering most unaware online consumers helpless.

There have been numerous anti-phishing efforts to take heed of the growth of such unlawful practices. The anti-phishing efforts need to actually start with the consumers who are not able to immediately identify the phishing activities, something that practically any Internet professional can do. First is the email phishing practice. The best way to combat these phishing activities is to think rationally and this includes how a person can be considered for such activities when he or she has not really signed up for anything. Finally, there is also the legal ways of tracking down these phishing experts, the most common way of anti-phishing known to modern day consumers. The Anti-Phishing Act that was introduced in 2005, covering criminals who create fake web sites and spam emails in order to defraud consumers can expect to be fined up to $250,000 and receive a jail term of up to five years. This alone proves that such phishing acts will not be tolerated and deprive people of their security when transacting over the Internet.

The best way to help fight off phishing activities is to approach all activities on the Internet in a very conservative manner. There is no question that hesitations and apprehensions when it comes to disclosing pertinent information should always be thought of twice. Fraudulent acts for people who choose to forego the security of their personal information, especially in the aspect of financial retrospect will be put in danger, considering that people who want to gather up all the information they need through unlawful acts of phishing for expected fraudulent utilization. The cases for such phishing activities are sure to be alarming to date, considering that most people have chosen to go with the times and make full use of what technology has to offer. However, the proper dissertation from such innovative acts of modern day transactions should be done with caution. The conservative and holding back some hesitations will still be a good way to avoid these phishing acts, most of which have created havoc towards the lives of people today.

A Good Pillow is Not Just for Neck Pain Sufferers Anymore

Post on Jul 31st 2008

Since we spend about one third of our life sleeping, a good pillow is not just for neck pain sufferers. Everyone can benefit from sleeping on a well designed pillow.

Some symptoms of poor neck and upper back alignment from the wrong pillow may include snoring, headaches, insomnia, numbness in the arms and hands and neck pain or stiffness.

The right neck pillow will cradle your head and support your neck without distorting the normal posture and alignment. Choosing the right neck pillow can be confusing, however, a good pillow can make a huge difference.

Avoid using too little or no neck pillow at all which places the unsupported neck under strain all night long. Using too many pillows or too firm of a pillow can push the neck up and pinch the joints together. This may strain muscles and place uneven pressure on joints which can cause inflammation, a common cause of neck pain when waking in the morning.

It is not recommended to sleep on your stomach as this puts pressure on your internal organs, neck, jaw and lower back!

It is important that neck pillows have a contour to accommodate the natural curves of the neck to maintain the proper neck posture while sleeping. Whether you sleep on your side or back, your pillow must be soft enough to mold to your head (weighing about 10 pounds) and still fill in the space between your bed and your neck. Your head is bigger than your neck so supporting both without distorting the position of your neck is important.

There are many neck pillows which offer good support and pain relief. You may have to try more than one to find the best pillow for you and your needs, but lets try to get some basics down.

If the head is too high or too low in relation to the rest of the body, the neck and upper back can be placed under stress. Similar problems can occur if the head is allowed to roll sideways when sleeping on your back, or if the upper back is not supported along with the neck.

Providing adequate support is difficult because most people sleep both on their sides and their backs, and these positions require different support. The head needs to be supported approximately two inches higher in the side position than in the back position. Many people often subconsciously try to make this correction by putting their hand under the pillow when they roll over on their sides. In the back sleeping position, the head not only needs to be supported at the right height, but prevented from tilting forward and restricting air passages, or from rolling from side to side which can put stress on the neck. Upper back support is also required in this position to prevent the weight of the body from pulling the neck out of alignment.

The selection criteria for a pillow that provides adequate support should be:

  • Supports the head at the proper height whether sleeping in the side or back position.
  • Prevents the head from rolling sideways when sleeping on the back.
  • Keeps the head tilted in the proper position while sleeping on the back.
  • Provides support for the neck and upper back when sleeping on the back
  • Pillows have gone high tech. Memory foam pillows are made with a space age material which can dampen vibrations and maintain neck temperature on cold evenings. A travel pillow made of memory foam is a good choice for on the road to avoid constant vibration and temperature changes which can increase levels of neck pain. Water pillows change as you move and have clinical studies to prove their effectiveness. There are also air inflatable pillows which you can adjust to your preference.

With the merger of high tech and the pillow, everyone can find one that is just right and benefits from a better nights sleep and better health.

    Baking Tips

    Post on Jul 31st 2008

Most people have a real basic idea about what they need when they set out to do baking at home, but most people dont have the background to know what works well and what does not, in the baking tips and tricks that I am going to show you will make your baking experience much more interesting and your work easier.

Baking Tip #1. Using tin baking pans is what they used in the 40s and 50s and they worked well but they didnt distribute the heat through the pan very well, by using a heavy gage aluminum baking pan the heat will be distributed through the pan a lot better giving you a much more evenly baked cake without any burn spot.

Baking Tip#2. Everyone tries to get a really smooth icing on their cake before decorating it but it just doesnt want to smooth out, well here is the way you do it. After you get the icing on the cake as smooth as you can dip the icing spatula in hot water and wipe in a towel to take off the water and lightly smooth out the icing, the heat from the spatula will melt the shortening in the icing causing it to become smooth. You will need to repeat this as many times as necessary.

Baking Tip#3. Cake ruffle around the base of your cake will make it much more appealing and only takes a moment to apply it.

Baking Tip#4 To make a better box cake mix use 4 medium eggs, 1/3 cup of vegetable oil, 1 1/4 cup cold water, 2 ounces pudding mix, this will give you a moister cake with a fluffier texture.

Baking Tip#5. When making cookies that you are going to roll out with your hands use an ice-cream scoop to dip them out and save yourself a great amount of time and they will also be the same size.

Baking Tip#6. Having cookies all the same size on a baking pan causes them all to bake more evenly and they will all come out of the oven looking great.

Baking Tip#7. When baking sugar cookies bake them on the two upper racks of your oven, this will cause them to bake more evenly because they wont get a lot of bottom heat on some and not on others. You want even browning on all.

Baking Tip#8. When baking cookies rotate the pans at the half point of the baking time.

Baking Tip#9. Always use parchment on your baking pans when baking cookies, it makes a lot easier.

Baking Tip#10. When baking a cake dont grease or flour your pan, just use parchment paper on the bottom of your pan and when the cake has been cooled cut around the sides of the pan with a sharp straight blade knife then dump the cake out onto the table and remove the parchment before assembling.

    The Dissatisfied Customer

    Post on Jul 31st 2008

We, as small business people, naturally dislike complaints from our clients and customers. Because we’re intimately involved with our home businesses, small businesses, or freelance careers, any complaint takes on a personal commentator. A dissatisfied customer is a direct reflection on our performance and a blow to our egos. The common reaction of small business people to a consumer complaint is defensive posturing and/or avoidance.

But ignoring a disgruntled customer can be much more damaging than small business owners realize.

When consumer complaints are avoided or ignored, the customer still needs to vent. A study done at Western Washington University and Illinois State University, shows that consumers who had a bad experience at a store most often responded in three ways:

They decided not to shop at the store again.

They told their friends and relatives about their bad experience.

They convinced friends and relatives not to shop at the store again.

If the customer decides never to use your services again, you’ve lost one customer. But the damage may be worse. There may be a real problem that the business is unable to address because they aren’t focused on it right now.

If the customer tells friends and relatives about their bad experience, the business now has a negative reputation with several customers and potential customers.

If the customer convinces friends and relatives not to use the business, the business has now lost several customer (probably for good), and the influenced customers will likely spread news of the original bad experience to their peer network in order to bolster the validity of their decision.

Backups Required for Your Online Business

    Post on Jul 31st 2008

Your on-line business cannot afford a feeling like this in your stomach

Have you ever experienced that terrible feeling in the pit of your stomach? You know the one. The one you hope is just a mistake. Nah, that couldnt really be happening to me. This only happens to the other guy. Not me.

Well it is happening to you. You just got a Windows blue screen. No, this is not your typical Application Error blue screen. This blue screen makes reference to unable to find boot sector or failure writing to default drive or some other ominous message then makes your body shutter, because you just lost your hard drive.

If you are like most people, you have little to no backup available. If you run an on-line business, this can be the kiss of death or at least a major financial set back.

This scenario happened to me recently. Well almost. I was lucky because my hard drive failed over a 2-day period so I was able to frantically start backing up data before the drive completely failed. I was sweating bullets before I got done. I did manage to recover about 85% of my data before the drive completely died.

Well, once I got a replacement drive in place, I vowed to not get in that situation again. I put a very simple (and cheap) backup process in place, which I recommend you do to especially if you rely on your computer for income.

First get an external USB hard drive that is at least as large as your computers hard drive. Preferably one that is 2 to 3 times larger than your computers hard drive. Depending on the size, they can run from about $75 to $300. If you watch the ads for your local computer stores you can find some great deals especially when a rebate is involved.

Next you need a simple backup up tool. I use a very cheap program called Ez-Back-It Up. I picked this program for several reasons: It was cheap, it would backup just changes, it didnt use a proprietary format (Windows Explorer could access the backed up files), it was easily configurable, and it had a built in scheduler. What more would I need?

So I hooked the external drive to my computer, installed the backup software, and did a little configuration. Since I have most of my programs save data in the My Documents folder I only had to select a couple data directories to backup (My Documents, Favorites, and Outlook). I scheduled it to run every night at 4 AM and I now have regular backups. The most I can lose now is a days worth of data. If I need to, I could have the backup run several times a day and even cut this window down.

So in just a few minutes, Ive created a system that will pretty much prevent that ugly feeling out of my stomach.

A-Rod: A Liability at Third Base

    Post on Jul 31st 2008

In the beginning of the year, when A-Rod was hearing it from the boobirds of Yankee Stadium, I was sticking up for the guy. I told friends, family, people on the internet, and fellow fans to give the guy a break and that he would be getting back on track relatively soon. A-Rod would get back to his old ways of playing great offensively, and playing a damn good third base for the Yankees. Rodriguez has been hearing it all year for his actions and inactions, whether its A-Rods tanning in Central Park, or his strikeouts late in games. Either way, this guy was the MVP of the league last year, and he would turn things around eventually, right? Well, wrong. Although Alexs average has been increasing as of late, and his power stroke seems to be back, it has reached a point where Alex Rodriguez has become a liability in the field for the Yankees.

Just today, A-Rod made his 20th error of the season, which is the most among all Major League third basemen. On Thursday against the White Sox, with two on and nobody out, Alex fielded an easy grounder for what looked to be an easy double play, but he threw the ball in rightfield, which cost the Yankees two runs, and ultimately a loss. In the Friday game against the Angels, with the Yankees down 3-1 and runners on 1st and 2nd, a ball was hit right at Alex which took a nasty hop, but was definitely catchable. A run scored, and one more would follow, putting the Yankees in a 5-1 hole that they would never climb out of. And then once again today, Alex misplayed a shot by Orlando Cabrera, which was ruled an error, and resulted in an Anaheim run.

With everything considered for this year, and his abysmal play at third base, I think its time that A-Rod received some time at designated hitter. Jason Giambi is less of a liability to the team playing first base, than Alex Rodriguez is playing third base for us. We should give Craig Wilson a shot at third base, put Giambi at first, and put A-Rod at DH, just to see how things would work out for us. I truly believe A-Rod is one of the best if not the best player in all of baseball, and is more than capable of winning a gold glove at third base, but how many errors does he have to make playing that position before Torre realizes that hes hurting the team by playing him?

How to Successfully Un-Subscribe from Newsletters and Ezines

    Post on Jul 31st 2008

Whilst many publishers of email based publications offer a clear “OPT IN” process and easy UNSUBSCRIBE links, you may find yourself drawn into a complex web with some publications by deceit or confusion which creates an increasing flow of email which potentially is spam or close to it.

Where you have previously subscribed to a newsletter you may find you get invitations from the same company inviting you to subscribe to other newsletters they publish and hence this “cross promotion” may give you more email that the simple once a month useful newsletter you initially agreed to subscribe to.

Some, less reputable newsletter publishers sell or rent off subscribers email addresses to other firms who, if they email you as a result are guilty of spamming you. Under the Spam Solution program such mailings may be sent to you as unique invitations and thus may escape detection as spam.

Many newsletters are notoriously difficult to unsubscribe from in a number of ways

They require you to login to your account and unsubscribe, but your login details are not shown so you have to take guesses to get logged in. Since you may have subscribed a long time past the login details, email address etc may not be clear so asking for reminders of login details may fail. Emailing the company often gets no reply or requests for “further information” and it could take many weeks or even months to get off the list. Tips for getting off a list

    1. When you join DO NOT ask for other information from the same company, just get the newsletter you asked for. There are often check boxes some which require you to ASK for extra information, others to OPT OUT so you get the extra info by default.

    2. Get monthly or weekly digests - you can get DAILY reports or even SEVERAL a day from some mailers.

    3. If possible opt for WEB ONLY read of newsletters so you get NO EMAIL at all.

    4. Use your Spam Solution email address to subscribe - and when you get the first issue set the SENDER to your SAFE SENDER list. This way any more mailings you get as a result of the mailing will be treated as spam as it will come from a different email address.

    5. Consider CHANGING your current (real) email address to your spam control account email, provided the sender is on your safe list you will still get the newsletter BUT any mailers who get your email will get your spam control email.

    PPC Tricks and Tips

    Post on Jul 31st 2008

PPC can be a minefield, creating as many problems as it solves especially if money is an issue. PPC can get very expensive very quickly.

Here are some tricks and tips:

Dont use any words that could be considered trademarked, such as McDonalds or ToysRUs. In many cases, these phrases will result in your account being suspended. Even worse, you could find yourself in a bit of legal hot water companies like these take their trademarks very seriously, and do not take kindly to people who use them for their own purposes. If for some reason you need to use a trademarked word or phrase, do yourself a favor and get permission before you use it.

Be wary of the promises you make. People are motivated by promises of free stuff beyond, but oftentimes that motivation only goes so far. If you offer something for free, chances are youll get lots of click-throughs, but most will only be people in search of something for nothing, which doesnt do your business any good. In fact, it will cost you money because you have to pay for the fact that they clicked on your ad. If you dont make such promises up front, you may get fewer click-throughs, but the people who do click on your ad will more likely be serious buyers.

As mentioned above, its imperative that you create destination pages. But that job doesnt stop once the page is created. Periodically check your conversion rates for each page, and if you find that one is suffering much worse than another, change it up. Just as it is important to change the order of your words in your ad campaign, changing your destination pages will help you optimize your conversion rate.

PPC, then, can be an inexpensive easy way to drive traffic to your site, but it can easily get out of hand. Make sure you crunch the numbers are bid according to how much you can actually afford while still potentially making a profit. It wont do you any good to big so high that your site is ranked first if you cant afford to sell your product at a rate that will still garner you a profit. Stay on top of things!

Top Consultant Asks: Is Customer Service A Skill Or A Discipline?

    Post on Jul 31st 2008

Would you agree that there are some people that seem to have a gift for delivering top customer service?

Their voices are lively, they listen patiently, and they organize their explanations succinctly and effectively.

And there are others who seem miscast in their roles. Theyre impatient, irritating or irritated, and theyre confusing.

It would be easy to impute skill to the first type. Theyre successful and theyre well received, and generally we believe people who get results at anything are more able than others.

They may have been born that way: cheerful, resilient, and happy to be of service.

When they say, Sure, Ill be happy to help you with that! it sounds heartfelt, while others stumble over or swallow this line and they come across as insincere.

We could even call the successful ones naturals, as in natural, born customer service people.

If there were sufficient numbers of these folks, we could concentrate on hiring only them and everything would be great. Without much supervision theyd steer themselves in the right direction and achieve consistent customer satisfaction.

But theyre rare, and this means we need to study what they do, instinctually, and turn those behaviors into protocols that the less gifted can emulate.

Ive been studying customer service and sales conversations for decades, and much of my academic work is in the field of Communications. I devise and test new and improved theories and practices.

Ive detected certain TONE PATTERNS, for example, that consistently satisfy customers. Naturals use these patterns without being aware of it.

Others can learn them and use them and get identical results.

This is when customer service becomes a DISCIPLINE. It is putting to work, consistently, those techniques that have been proven to work, transaction after transaction.

Disciplines are much more reliable than skills. For instance, a natural have a bad day, week, or month and not know what to do to sound better and to achieve at her former levels.

But if she has been taught a discipline, she can replicate her best performances irrespective of her attitude or mood.

By using patterned texts and by making her voice hit certain notes shell unfailingly come across as cheerful and ready, willing, and able to help.

As a manager or owner it pays to invest in disciplines, rational routines for conducting business that deliver predictable and reliable results. If you invest merely in skills, then youre betting the business on individual personalities, and when they leave, they take the ability to achieve with them!
