Acupuncture: Alternative Treatment For Relief From Pain

Post on Sep 14th 2008

Acupuncture is slowly making its presence felt among the medical fraternity as an effective alternative to problems where regular medical treatment has either failed or not been able to rid the body completely of pain and disease. There are times when antibiotics and other medical procedures are just not effective. The problems could be backaches, arthritis, severe headaches, migraines or any other type of pain and acupuncture can give you a whole new avenue of treatment that will prove beneficial.

The system uses fine needles which are inserted into the body at specific points that help in releasing pent up energy and allows it to flow smoothly through the body again. This invisible energy, called Qi pronounced Chi, flows through channels in the body known as Meridians and the theory is that if this flow is blocked by something at certain points it results in pain that is felt by the person. The needles then release this block and facilitate the smooth flow of energy and the person gets relief from his pain.

Arthritis is a problem of inflammation of the joints, tendons and ligaments in the human body. This can happen in any part of the body. There are different degrees of pain in arthritis. One is just the stiffness of the joints while there are others which are much more painful and almost crippling in nature. Arthritis comes in different forms like osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, gout etc. Knee and ankle pain are other painful condition where relief can be felt in the intensity of the pain in 3-4 sessions. The procedure goes like this: about 4 to 10 needles are inserted and the patient relaxes for about 30-40 minutes while the needles do their job. The insertions are those points that are along the meridian line that lies over the muscles of other tissue. The needles are never inserted anywhere near the brain, chest, spinal cord, blood vessels, arteries, veins or any abdominal organs.

There are a lot of people who are plagued by migraines, sinus headaches and headaches of other types. These are generally characterized by throbbing, pulsating and pounding nerves in the head. Patients have found that traditional medicines do not give full relief and at times the effect of the medication is temporary. Acupuncture on the other hand has proved to be very beneficial. It could be manual acupuncture where the acupuncturist manipulates the needles by twirling them with his hand and uses no electrical stimulation or auricular methods which involve insertion of needles in the earlobes of the person to give the necessary stimulation.

Acupuncture has worked well with patients who suffer from fibromyalgia, soft tissue pain or back pain. It also helps treat those who have a carpel tunnel syndrome. This problem starts at the fingers with tingling and numbness which may travel up to the elbow. Needles are inserted at specific meridian points along the hand and face. It could involve the use of magnets, taped metal pellets and staples to the points on the earlobes, face or tongue and very often, there is almost instant cure.
