Acupuncture For The Treatment of Pain

Post on Jun 29th 2008

Most people experience significant pain at some time in their lives whether from injury or illness. Pain is a warning signal that tells the body that something is wrong and out of balance. Often people suffering from pain try to cover it up, by either ignoring it or taking medication. However, treated this way, the source of the pain will never completely go away. Unless the source of the pain is treated the body will keep sounding the alarm and pain will return.

What can you do?

No one should have to live with pain, but what treatment is right for you? One approach is to rest and hope that the pain will just disappear. This may help for a while, but could delay reco0very and make the problem worse.

Another choice is to take medication for the pain which often just dulls the pain. This may be helpful but it would not get to the root of the pain. Also many medications may cause unwanted side effects that my further compromise the body.

Surgery may be another option. At times, this approach may make sense, but it could be both expensive and risky, and there is no guarantee that will be effective.

Chinese medicine and Acupuncture is a time-tested, safe, effective natural way to eliminate pain. The World health Organization (WHO) and the National Institutes of health (NIH) acknowledge the benefits of acupuncture in treating and eliminating pain from a wide range of causes.

Chinese Medicine approach to pain

Acupuncture practitioners recognize that there is a vital life energy called Qi circulating within the body. Qi flows through a series of pathways called meridians. Meridians are like energy highways that carry qi to different organs and parts of the body. When there is pain it is believed that these energy pathways become blocked and qi can not flow freely through out the meridians and can not nourish the body. Under normal circumstances your body can easily return to good health and vitality. But if the blockage of qi is prolonged and the body is in a weakened state the symptoms of pain will continue.

Things that can block Qi:

> Poor diet
> Physical trauma
> Emotional trauma
> Inherited weak Qi
