Ayurvedic Cooking Tips For Healthy Living

Post on Jun 22nd 2008

All human beings should follow a sattvic or pure life-style that gives peace and clarity of mind. Physical purity includes pure diet, with raw or freshly cooked vegetarian food, pure air and water, proper exercise of a calming nature, as well as physical cleanliness.

Here are some ayurvedic Tips for better and health living.

1. Ayurveda is Sanskrit for the knowledge of life or daily living. The wisdom, depth and enduring utility of Ayurveda are a testimony to the civilization from which it came. This medical system emphasizes that humans come from nature, that we are an integral part of the universe, and that we have a responsibility to it. The balance of the universe lives within us. It is a system, which focuses on physical health, believing that it is much easier to pursue spiritual studies or contribute to the life of the community if you are whole and healthy.

2. The ancients offered ten principles about a healthy diet and how it is to be eaten. They are:

Food needs to be hot (usually cooked).

Food needs to be tasty and easy to digest.

Food needs to be eaten in the proper amounts, not too much or too little.

Food needs to be eaten on an empty stomach, after your last meal has been digested, and not before.

Foods need to work together and not contradict one another in their actions.

Foods need to be eaten in pleasant surroundings with the proper equipment for their enjoyment.

Eating should not be rushed.

Eating should not be a horrendously drawn out affair, either.

It is best to focus on your food while eating.

Only eat food which is nourishing to your particular constitution and which suits your mental and emotional temperament.

3. Food taken in the proper quantity is regarded as most important. In Ayurveda, food is medicine as well as nourishment and what one eats matters vitally.

4. Essential to the healing in this system is the idea that our health and constitution are affected by what we eat. In Ayurveda, food and our environment, are likely to stay clean, clear and healthy. If we eat and behave in ways, which harm our bodies and the planet, knowingly or unknowingly, we are likely to suffer the consequences.

5. Herbs are used extensively in Ayurveda as a vital support to foods. By using particular herbs, one can profoundly alter the balance of the constitution. Herbs are used to stimulate digestion and enhance absorption. They are used to balance a wide variety of conditions.

6. When we enter this world at birth is known in Ayurveda as our innate constitution or prakruti. What we do with our constitution is up to us. It is the source book for our health, vitality and well-being. The five elements come together to create three basic constitutional types. They are Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. If air and ether predominate in your constitution, you are Vata in nature. If fire and water take the lead in your physical makeup, Pitta is the result. If water and earth hold ascendancy in your body at birth, Kapha is your constitution.

7. Each constitution has different needs. Meeting these needs assures balance and better chances for good health and peace of mind.
