Bunt Young, Bunt Often In Little League

Post on Aug 29th 2008

Bunting is a very big part of baseball. And, when a bunt is laid down the right way, it is very difficult to defend. I have always been big on bunting, and feel it can be taught at a young age. There are basically two types of bunts: the square bunt and the pivot bunt. My preference is the pivot bunt because the players just pivot on their toes and do not have to lift their feet. Once in a playoff game, I had a player perform a square bunt, and he put down a perfect bunt, and beat it outwe all thought. The only problem was, when he lifted his leg and put it down in a different position, it was right on home plate and he was called out. The best way to teach bunting for the first time is to practice with a soft covered ball or a rag ball, which is described in The 59 Minute Baseball Practice video. With the rag balls or a soft covered ball, there is very little danger of getting hurt, and the players can actually pitch to each other. Once they seem confident, coaches can pitch a hard ball to his team.

There are many bunting strategies that can be used in a game. My favorite is with less than two out and a runner on third. In this situation, the batter can bunt to the third baseman as the base runner bounces toward home. When the third baseman releases the ball to first base, the player on third runs home, and must slide. If it is a good bunt, and the base runner breaks to home when he should, this is almost unstoppable. Remember that youth baseball players can practice bunting at a very young age. Seek out your high school coach to teach the proper technique. Also, make sure your best bunters get a chance to swing away.

Little League Back-up Situations For Outfielders
As Little League baseball coaches, sometimes we try to teach too much in too short a period. Ive coached three youth sports and have found that youth baseball is the most over-coached and under-taught sport Ive seen on the youth level. A good example is teaching back-up situations. It is especially beneficial to teach back-up situations to your...

Correct Batting Practice Methods For Little League Baseball Teams
In my eighteen years of coaching youth baseball, I am always looking for the most efficient practice methods for every aspect of baseball. It took me only a few years to realize that most youth baseball coaches and myself were running batting practice, not incorrectly, but not efficiently. From what I have seen with the typical batting practice, a...

Backing Up In The Field In Little League Baseball
While managing or coaching in youth baseball for the last 18 years, I have found that teaching 11 and 12 year olds how to back each other up in the field can help keep them in the game on almost every play. Of course I learned the importance of backing up the hard way over the years, when sure groundouts would translate into a single and three base...

Carlos Zambrano
One of the best pitchers in the league this season has been Carlos Zambrano of the Chicago Cubs. Even without great run support, Zambrano has been able to get the job done time and time again. This is saying a lot for a guy that is pitching for a team that has been out of the playoff race for quite a few months. At only 25 years old Zambrano is one ...

What I Know and Remember About Baseball - First Base Reach
It is a tight game and the batter is a known bunter. Third and Second baseman are playing in on the grass in anticipation. The Pitcher delivers an inside fastball. Just as the Pitchers arm is ready to release the batter squares around and shows bunt.Third base crashes down to gather up the ball which takes a funny hop to the infield away from his g...

Josh Johnson
Josh Johnson is one of the best young pitchers in the National League. He has shown this time and time again during the 2006 season for the Florida Marlins. When Johnson is on the mound the Marlins have a great chance to end up on top. When it comes down to it, Johnson is only 22 years old, and has plenty of great years ahead of him on the mound. F...
