Life With Chronic Pain - No Relief In Sight - How Relaxation Therapy Brings Real Relief And New Life

Post on Sep 6th 2008

If you suffer from chronic pain, you know it spills over into every part of your life. Holding your children can trigger unbearable back spasms. Going to a movie or watching a play can turn a low-grade headache into a full-blown migraine. Arthritis can weaken hands, legs and feet so that tossing a ball or buckling a seatbelt is too painful and exhausting to attempt.

Good Pain and Bad Pain

Acute pain is a normal sensation triggered in the nervous system to alert you to possible injury and the need to take care of yourself. Chronic pain is different. Chronic pain persists. Pain signals keep firing in the nervous system for weeks, months, even years[1] .

According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, chronic pain is bad pain. It is pain that serves no productive purpose. It is a system gone awry. In essence, the pain limits your ability to enjoy your life, to spend time with family and to get the exercise you need to be healthy. All this can lead to sleep disorders and feelings of isolation, mood swings and depression.

What Causes Chronic Pain?

The origin of chronic pain in some cases can be pinpointed to an injury or illness that you never really recovered from (such as damaged nerves from a broken bone or infection). In other cases, the cause is not known. The pain has no visible origin, no tangible reason for being. And yet the pain is never ending, unforgiving. In those cases, your doctor may label your pain as psychogenic. The very name seems to have negative connotations. And in many cases, especially with the US healthcare system, it makes it even harder to find treatment.

One thing is for sure, 95 percent of all illness in America is caused by or exacerbated by mental stress.

While traditional Western medicine in the form of pain killers, anti-inflammatory medication and surgery may not always work. There are some forward thinking physicians such as Dr. Herbert Benson, Director Emeritus of the Benson-Henry Institute for Mind Body Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital, who are designing new and effective ways to treat pain.

Regarded by many as the godfather of modern mind/body medicine, Benson coined the phrase relaxation response — the bodys natural counter-move to stress, sickness and chronic pain. This relaxation response is a physiological change that has been proven to be one of the most effective ways to relieve the tensions of modern-day living for a healthier, pain free, more productive life.
How can you bring about the relaxation response in you body?

Yoga, Tai Chi and other forms of meditation and visualization are common practices that many people use to reduce stress. But when chronic pain is involved, you often need help help in the form of relaxation therapy.

The idea behind relaxation therapy is to rid your body of accumulated stress hormones (like cortisol and adrenaline) while increasing endorphins (your bodys self-produced pain medicine). One of the best and most pleasurable relaxation therapies practiced today is called Floating.

Floating (or floatation therapy) is proven to be a powerful treatment for pain. And when you combine floating with meditation and / or visualization, the results can be dramatic! According to a study done by Health and Clinical Psychology Magazine, when floating combined with visualization, 81 percent of patients saw significantly reduced pain levels[2] .

What does it feel like?

Floating consists of lying in a shallow pool of salt water, within a room that limits external distractions such as light and noise. The water and air temperature are set precisely at 93.5 degrees (the exact surface temperature of your skin). The water is saturated with Epson salt that cradles your body and releases you from gravitys pull. The feeling is one of absolute calm and lightness like nothing you have ever experienced.

Simply lie back, relax and practice any form of meditation or visualization you feel comfortable with and in no time at all, chronic pain subsides. Anxiety and depression lift. And you will sleep more deeply at night. All of which help contribute to a more relaxed, healthy, pain-free body.

Is the Fibromyalgia Guaifenesin Treatment Right for Me?

Post on Sep 5th 2008

In the world of painful diseases there is a list of those that are considered to be the most painful. These include rheumatoid arthritis and a slipped disk in the back. For those that suffer these types of disorders they know how painful they can be. Fibromyalgia has now joined these disorders at the top of the pain list. For many years people who suffered from fibromyalgia had a hard time justifying their pain because the medical community didnt always accept that they did indeed have something wrong with them. The pain of fibromyalgia is very real and many people are driven to try and find any cure or treatment to relieve their symptoms. One of the treatments that shows some promise is the fibromyalgia guaifenesin treatment.

The fibromyalgia guaifenesin treatment was initially pioneered by Dr. Paul St, Amand. Dr. Amand derived the guaifenesin treatment from regular cough syrup and used it to help people who suffer from fibromyalgia treat and even entirely rid themselves of the symptoms. There have been success stories of differing degrees of people from all over the world successfully using the guaifenesin treatment to relieve their painful symptoms. As happens with any medication there are side affects to you must consider. For this reason it is important to discuss any side affects that may accompany the use of the guaifenesin treatment with your doctor.

The side affect that seems to be reported most when it comes to people using the fibromyalgia guaifenesin treatment is weight gain. Up to eight pounds of weight gain, mostly from water retention, in just a few weeks has been reported by many people undertaking this treatment. Other side affects reported include a lack of sexual desire which leads to no interest in sex, which can be a problem for those in a relationship. Another issue that some people who have used this treatment have is that for some it has taken up to a year for the side affects caused by the guaifenesin treatment to go away.

Fibromyalgia guaifenesin treatment has worked for many people and if you currently suffer from this condition it may be a treatment option. By talking with your doctor you can decide if it is indeed the right way to go, but do be aware that it can have side affects and you need to be aware of them and report them to your doctor if you experience any of them.

Seeking relief from the symptoms of fibromyalgia can be frustrating. To find out more about this disease, its symptoms and the guaifenesin treatment click here.

Have You Tried Reflexology - Wonderful Pain Relief?

Post on Sep 5th 2008

BENEFITS OF REFLEXOLOGY

Reduces
- Stress and tension
- Headaches, stiff necks
- Back pain
- Sinus symptoms
Relieves

Sore, swollen, aching feet, bunion pain

Joint pain

Indigestion, constipation, digestive disorders
Allergy symptoms
PMT, menopausal symptoms

Boosts and balances

Circulation, nervous and lymphatic functions

So what is reflexology?
General Definition : Reflexology is the application of pressure using thumb and fingers on reflex points in the feet and hands to stimulate a physiological change in the body. IT IS NOT A FOOT MASSAGE!
If a body part is not functioning correctly, uric acid, calcium and mineral deposits may accumulate in the reflexes, impeding energy flow and circulation. A skilled Professional Reflexologist can assist in breaking down and dispersing these deposits, helping to restore the body to better health.

It is medically accepted that 75% of all illness and disease are stress related.

Relaxation is the first step towards normalising nerve and blood supply to all areas of the body which then encourages better circulation for the supply of nutrients and oxygen to the cells. Glands are then able to normalise their function.

Each foot has approximately 7500 nerve endings which signal to the brain. There are also 26 bones, 19 muscles and 13 leg muscles, 50 ligaments, 3 arches and approximately 800 metres of blood, nerves and lymph vessels.

Where can you do reflexology?
Reflexology is typical done on the feet. Reflexology can be done on the ears and the hands. This is commonly used when you cannot work the feet, e.g. people who do not have legs or feet, people who do not like having their feet touched, when it is awkward to work the feet, there are referral points on the hands. The feet are the preferred area to work as they are a larger and easier to access.

Hand reflexology is beneficial if people have hand problems eg arthritis or carpel tunnel. There are 26 bones in the hand and the medial, radial and ulnar nerves, muscles, tendons and ligaments.

Hand reflexology is non threatening and it can be done in a public place without feeling uncomfortable. We can do it ourselves easier on our hands than our feet and can be done when waiting - for a bus, plane, outside the bosses office!

We use our hands as an extension of ourselves, we say the feet represent our direction in life our hands show our emotions, we talk with our hands, we use them to work and do our hobbies, there is very little that we do not do without our hands, they are our sensory guide. However this means that they are less sensitive than our feet.

The World Health Authority recognises the reflexology ear chart.
Reflexology is also accepted by most health funds in Australia.

How do you choose a Reflexologist?
When choosing a Reflexologist, make sure you choose a Professional Reflexologist. In Australia look for someone with the initials RAA behind their name (Reflexology Association of Australia) or ICR (International Council of Reflexology). This means that the Reflexologist has done most of their studies in reflexology (as opposed to massage therapy) and will know a number of different reflexology techniques and will have studied different aspects to reflexology (eg meridians, gaits, mobilisation techniques, nutrition etc - however there are many more aspects to reflexology than one way of doing a treatment).

There are many specialities in reflexology eg, infertility, insomnia, back pain, menopause, RSI, depression, autism, elderly, children etc. Most reflexologists will be able to do a general treatment to assist symptoms of any medical problem, which a client may present to them, however you may be able to find a Remedial Reflexologist who specialises in your symptoms. For example my specialties are womens health (fertility, maternity, PMT, Menopause) and any back problems, although I have had success with many other ailments. To remain a member of the Association they also have to gain a number of CPE points each year (continuing Professional Education), which means they will be up to date on the latest research and techniques.

Over the years there has been much research into the efficacy of reflexology and there are many cases available on the internet. For example : In Switzerland, nurses working with cancer patients routinely use reflexology to decrease pain and in the UK a purpose built cancer unit is providing reflexology, aromatherapy and treatment for lymph oedema. Reflexology is recognised by the National Health Service in the UK and the National Health Authority (UK) recognises it as a treatment in easing symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis. Research closer to home was done using reflexology for oedema in pregnancy by Gosford Hospital.

Studies in China, Denmark, South Africa, USA and Europe have shown its effectiveness on a wide range of conditions including migraine, respiratory problems, infertility, renal conditions, musculoskeletal problems, PMT, colic in infants and withdrawal from drug abuse symptoms.
It is widely used in hospitals in China and many companies worldwide have reflexologists on staff to combat stress in the workplace.

I have found it beneficial with clients who have back pain that does not ease, clients who have a lot of feet pain and been everywhere else, eg. doctors, physio, podiatrists, ortho surgeons, but no one who actually works all the muscles, tendons, nerve endings for a whole hour! This is what a reflexologist does and the relief is noticeable!!! I often have people hobbling in to my clinic with feet problems and dancing out!

With back pain and general pain or allergies, I find that while there is noticeable relief after the first treatment, the difference is more noticeable after a couple of treatments - however this is not always the case! Reflexology also compliments chiropractic treatments as it eases muscle stiffness commonly found with adjustments and if done before makes the bones easier to manipulate.

I trust that this has whetted your appetite to at least give reflexology a try. You will experience the benefits after the first treatment. A treatment programme would typically be once a week for four to six weeks, then depending on the condition being treated, once a month or more frequently if you have the finances! It lasts for just under an hour.

It is a great immune system booster and central nervous system relaxer. I have clients who come to see me weekly because it helps them handle stressful work loads and keeps them healthy and motivated! My clinics are in Oxenford and Windaroo, Queensland, Australia.

Managing Chronic Pain - Not A Quick Fix

Post on Sep 5th 2008

You have a pesky headache, so you reach for the aspirin. You can ice a bruise to reduce swelling. When youve had surgery, painkillers are prescribed. The pain resulting from these situations may be acute but thankfully, its usually temporary. Chronic pain, though, lasts for days, months or even years, undermining quality of life. Chronic pain is common, yet managing it successfully can be elusive.

Chronic pain is a complex condition, involving the source and history of the pain how it has been treated, the perception of pain by the individual and the psychological toll it has taken. If youve experienced chronic pain, you may have suffered lethargy, fatigue, depression or anxiety. Dont ignore untreated, persistent pain; it could be symptomatic of a disease or injury that will only get worse without treatment.

How we address chronic pain

We first diagnose the source of chronic pain, and review its history, treatment, if any, and results. This may be difficult, because pain may have no discernable source, such as the widespread pain of fibromyalgia. Pain, with or without a known source is real, and should be taken seriously.

We find that a multidisciplinary treatment program is the best pain management approach, because it takes addresses the whole person, including physiological and psychological aspects of pain. Pain management is not all about medications. With appropriate medications, complementary therapies and lifestyle changes, patients engage in their recovery and gain a renewed sense of control of their lives. While a cure may not always be possible, managing pain should be.

Common causes of chronic pain
i

These include headaches, back pain, arthritis, cancer pain, post-injury and post-operative pain, and neuropathic pain, which result from nerve injury. Treatment is specific to the individual. For example, someone with arthritis may need occasional over the counter medications, while another is prescribed regular aerobic exercise or physical therapy and prescription antiflammatory drugs.

Americans are conditioned to look for the quick fix, the magic pill. In some cases narcotic prescription drugs are appropriate, but the majority of chronic pain cases, theres a variety of effective and safer therapies, including some exciting new drugs. These therapies usually take more time to work, requiring more patience.

At Hanley Center, hanleycenter.org we treat many patients recovering from addictions to pain and other medications. Addiction is a brain disease with genetic components, so talk to your doctor about appropriate, non-narcotic pain medications if you have a family history of addiction, or if you are in recovery. Narcotics can also significantly change ones perception of pain, often making it intolerable. The impulse is to over-medicate. This dangerous and probably wont lesson pain in the long run.

Pain medications

Drugs traditionally used to treat chronic pain are acetaminophens, such as Tylenol, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as aspirin, ibuprofen, and naproxen, such as Aleve (OTC) or Naprosyn (prescription). These drugs inhibit hormones that stimulate nerve cells the injury site, causing swelling and infection. Opioids such as morphine and codeine can be very effective for treating severe chronic pain. They block pain by locking onto opioid receptors in the brain. But they can be addictive and can cause lack of concentration, drowsiness, dizziness and constipation.

Newer drugs to treat pain have often been developed to treat other conditions such as seizures or depression. Duloxetine (Cymbalta) is an antidepressant, and is effective in treating diabetic neuropathy. Neurantin (brand Lyrica) affects chemicals and nerves in the body that cause seizures, and can treat some types of pain, as in herpes virus or shingles.

Managing pain with narcotics, other prescription medications and OTC drugs can cause serious side effects and interactions. Inform your doctor about all current medications.

The mind/body connection

Why do some people totally recover from injuries and others with similar injuries suffer for years? How a person physiologically responds to pain may determine the development of chronic pain. For example, after the initial trauma, the bodys neurological processes may cause the central nervous system to create a memory of the pain. And if the injured person relies solely on medication and doesnt carry through with prescribed physical therapy and exercise regime, chronic pain can become crippling.

There are many pain management methods. Some of these include:

  • Acupuncture
  • Expressive and creative therapies include art, music, movement, and journaling.
  • Cognitive behavior therapy
  • Massage
  • Meditation
  • Breathing exercises

Appropriate Exercise is important for almost anyone suffering from chronic pain. Weight bearing exercise is therapeutic for osteopina, the precursor of osteoarthritis. Try aqua-aerobics if walking is difficult. Yoga can be gentle, strenuous, or meditative. Many find Tai Chi and Jin Shin Jitsu healing.

Biofeedback: By using an electronic machine, the patient becomes aware of and gains control of muscle tension, heart rate and skin temperature, then learns to affect changes in her response to pain.

Attitude is key to successfully managing pain. Having a routine, a support system, paying attention to proper nutrition, getting adequate sleep, and not skipping exercise are all effective. Join a walking group, a gentle yoga class, the Y for aqua aerobics. Get moving and get involved.

Migraine Relief - Home Treatment for Migraine

Post on Sep 4th 2008

Millions of Americans suffer from migraine. It is a neurological condition where you will experience an intense headache on one or both sides of the head and often radiates from the eye. Migraine is a very disabling disease, you will experience pounding pain, vomiting and nausea. Some when having migraine attacks cannot get out of bed and cannot work at all or go on their daily routine. Fortunately you can apply home treatment for migraine during attacks to relieve the pains.

Home treatment for migraine

One home treatment for migraine is using a frozen towel. Wet and squeeze a towel and place in the freezer for 5 minutes. When the towel is frozen place it around your head and eyes. This will give relief to the pounding pain.

Another home treatment for migraine is massage. Lie down on a quiet darkened room and have someone massage your head and scalp to relieve the pain. But you can also do it yourself; you can massage your scalp and forehead rotating your fingers.

Aroma therapy. Not all people find relief in aroma therapy but there are migraine sufferers who find relief and relaxation using aroma therapy. Essential oils and certain scents help ease stress, tension and migraine. Common essential oils helpful for migraine are lavender and peppermint.

Ginger is also one home treatment for migraine due to its anti inflammatory properties. It helps in the circulation and relaxes blood vessels. Fresh ginger, lightly cooked or in the form of dried ginger powder helps relieve and prevent migraine attacks.

Drink plenty of water. Proper hydration is also one home treatment for migraine. Sometimes headache starts from dehydration that is why it is important to drink plenty of water. It is recommended that we drink at least 8 glasses of water daily.

Know your trigger. Migraine attacks have different triggers for different people. Some have migraine attacks after eating certain foods or if suffering from too much stress. As a home treatment for migraine, you must learn and observe your triggers to prevent migraine attacks. Make a diary of all your activities, what you have done, what you ate etc. before the onset of migraine attacks. This will help you determine your triggers and prevent future attacks.

Not all migraine attacks are treatable with home remedies. If the above mentioned home treatment for migraine didnt work you need advice from your doctor. But if you have tried everything and still found little or no relief you can try to modify your life style to prevent migraine attacks.

Natural Pain Relief Management

Post on Sep 4th 2008

Relieving pain has been a primary goal for many doctors, specialists, and individuals. With some many drugs available, it is important to find the right medicine that will help and natural pain relief is very important. Often, individuals are wary of using prescription drugs and over the counter medicines because of the purported side effects. No one wants to suffer from pain, especially when it is debilitating to our normal functions. Arthritis is an especially painful malady that affects a great many individuals. This malady affects individuals daily and they must seek relief from any pain reliever that might help.

Speaking with a physician about natural methods may help you find a better way to deal with the pain you might feel. Natural pain relief is an idea that is becoming more important to solving a great deal of pain. We are going back to our roots when medicines did not exist as widely as they do today and individuals sought herbal remedies. Today herbal remedies utilizing anti- inflammatory agents found in nature are becoming more widely used. These herbs and botanicals that grow in the wild are a natural remedy for inhibiting pain. One of the best ideas behind natural pain relief is a reduction on the side effects.

Modern medicine has a bountiful amount of side effects. We see these in commercials where they list the disadvantages of these medications after listing what it can help. They often ask an individual to seek a physicians advice before taking these products. With the natural pain relief method you do not have to worry about side effects other than an allergy to the herbs and botanicals that might be involved in the remedy.

No matter which method you choose, whether it is natural or prescription or over the counter you need to consult a physician about what is best for you. Trying the natural remedy may not ease the pain, however it is worthwhile if it does.

Once you have consulted your doctor and begun treatment it is important to see if the affects of the remedy do indeed decrease your pain and therefore increase your mobility. Arthritis is one such malady that can be treated with a natural method. Arthritis is an inflammation of joints limiting your mobility and causing undue pain. Natural pain relief using anti- inflammatory herbs and botanicals can lessen that pain to a great extent.

This is not said to detract from the benefits of prescription or over the counter medicines. They have their purpose. Individuals over time have found the decreased pain in using these methods. Knowing what will work for you is important after all it is your pain doctors wish to decrease. Prescriptions and over the counter medicines have their place in helping reduce pain. If you experience no undue side effects, sticking with what works can be the best option. It is you who must decide whether natural pain relief will benefit your needs more than other remedies.

Everything That You Ever Wanted To Know About Headache Remedies

Post on Sep 2nd 2008

Those who suffer from headache or a continuous pain in the head are in search of remedies that often elude them. It is because the head is the most complicated part of the body that controls all activities and monitors everything related to that trying to keep its activities hidden. When headache attacks a person no visible physical strains are there and to locate the point it generated from is a highly difficult task. That is the reason why right remedies are not easy to pinpoint for a particular case.

No doubt good painkillers are there. But these can give only temporary relief by hiding the cause for the time being. Moreover, repeated use of the same drugs makes those less effective gradually. There are numerous causes of headache. There are remedies too, be those medications or natural remedies. To find out the right remedies for your headache you have to try hard to locate the cause first. Of course, you need medical advice to do that but you yourself too can take an initiative in the matter.

For example, your food or drinking or smoking habits can be the culprits that make you suffer. You can experiment by changing those or even halting some for sometime at least. If the results are good try to stick to the new habits.

Magnesium deficiency can be behind a headache. It can cause, besides regular headaches, cluster headaches or even migraines. Therefore you have to reduce your mental stress, if any. Coffee, sugar, high sodium diet, alcohol, tobacco etc. can cause magnesium deficiency. You have to be careful in the matter especially if your magnesium deficiency test result sounds an alarm.

In coffee, tea, chocolate, sodas and some even painkillers caffeine is marked by its presence. Caffeine causes headache. So exert caution the matter if you are really in search of remedies.

Do not take too much sodium especially if you find your sodium intake had gone up significantly before an attack.

Since common cold can push headache as its symptom you can take zinc in capsule or lozenge form to check that.

Sometimes people suffering from migraine headaches believe that they have sinus headaches. Women generally suffer more from migraine headache. In earlier times, women did not get the same importance as men even in the matter of medical care. So myths often surrounded the migraine headache being considered as a womens disease. Some signs of those wrong impressions or myths still remain, dissuading women from taking medical advice.

For migraine patients there are many painkillers that are quite common but have side effects too. With the introduction of Sumatriptan in 1991, there is a new ray of hope for patients suffering from migraine.

For tension-type headaches a number of oral medications are in use. Salicylate analgesics, acetaminophen and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like Advil are some of those. But you should not forget that minimizing stress is very important if you are in search of remedies for this type of headache. Enough sleep and regular exercise are to be taken seriously. Relaxation techniques like spinal manipulation or massage can be great natural remedies.
If you grind your teeth during sleep it can cause a headache. This tendency is known as bruxism and you have to take the help of a dentist. He may recommend a plastic mouthpiece. Another similar dental problem known as temporomandibular disorder or TMJ that causes pain, muscle spasms or joint imbalances can also cause headaches. In this case too a dentist can recommend a suitable remedy.

Sometimes injuries or a brain tumor can be behind a headache. In such cases medical advice is to be solicited to find out remedies through medications or even surgery as the case may be.

Often a problem almost impossible to redress is jokingly equated with a headache. But seriously speaking, headache has remedies. One can depend on medications or natural remedies depending on the nature of the specific case.

Top Tips To Treat Chest Pain

Post on Sep 2nd 2008

Chest pain is a serious symptom meaning “heart attack” to most people. Serious chest discomfort should usually be evaluated by a physician right now. On the way to the emergency room or while waiting for the ambulance, take two aspirin tablets. While pain from the heart may sometimes be mild, it is usually intense. Sometimes a feeling of pressure or squeezing on the chest is more prominent than actual pain. Almost always the pain or discomfort will be felt in part below the breastbone. It may also be felt in the jaw or down the inner part of either arm. There may be nausea and sweating. If dizziness, shortness of breath, or irregularity of the pulse is present, it is particularly important that a physician be seen immediately.

A related form of heart pain is not a heart attack but is termed “angina pectoris” or “angina.” These pains also can occur in the upper arms or the jaw, but usually involve part of the breastbone. Angina pains occur with exercise and sometimes with stress, and they go away with rest and relaxation. They are a result of narrowed arteries to the heart that are unable to supply enough blood when the heart is working hard. In a heart attack, one of these same arteries has actually become totally blocked. However, all chest pain does not come from the heart. Pain can also come from the chest wall, the lungs, the outside covering of the lungs, the outside covering of the heart, the esophagus, the diaphragm, the spine, the skin, or the organs in the upper part of the abdominal cavity. Often it is difficult even for a physician to determine the precise origin of the pain. Therefore there are no absolute rules that enable you to determine which pains may be treated at home. The following guidelines usually work and are used by doctors, but there are occasional exceptions.

A shooting pain lasting a few seconds is common and means nothing. A sensation of a “catch” at the end of a deep breath is also trivial and does not need attention. Chest wall pain can be demonstrated by pressing a finger on the chest at the spot of discomfort and reproducing or aggravating the pain by this maneuver. Pleurisy gets worse with a deep breath, heart pain does not. When pericarditis is present, the pain may throb with each heartbeat. Ulcer pain burns with an empty stomach and gets better with food, gallbladder pain often becomes more intense after a meal. Each of these four conditions, when suspected, should be evaluated by a physician.

Spasm of the esophagus can cause severe pain mimicking a heart attack and is quite different from the acid-burning that we called heartburn. This spasm pain feels as if it is expanding from inside the chest rather than squeezing from the outside as does heart pain. And it is often relieved by a drink of water, while heart pain is not.

If your chest pain is a new sensation and you are not sure what is going on, you should be evaluated promptly in an emergency medical facility. This is a complaint for which it is better to be conservative. See a doctor. Exceptions are chest wall pain, particularly if you had unusual exertion a day or so before, or pain that you are sure is coming from the esophagus. These you can treat with rest and acetaminophen, in the case of chest wall pain, and water and antacids, in the case of pain coming from the esophagus.

Chronic Tendonitis - What Is It? - How To Treat It?

Post on Sep 1st 2008

There are many people in the world that suffer from chronic tendonitis. This can be extremely unpleasant situation for those people. “Chronic” means recurring. Chronic tendonitis can affect the tendons in many different parts of the body. Tendons are the elastic tissue that connects the muscle to the bone.

As we get older the tendons start to lose there elasticity due to age and normal wear and tear. The elderly are at a higher risk of developing chronic tendonitis. Sometimes with over use, these tendons will break or tear and then scar tissue will form. Scar tissue is not as flexible as the tendons themselves and with continued use inflammation and pain will occur.

The specific areas that are most effected are, the shoulders, ankles, elbows and feet. The main problem with these areas is that they typically dont have a chance to rest. We are using these parts constantly during the day. They never really get a chance to heal, other than when we sleep. What happens then with the constant use, chronic tendonitis develops.

Now you have to understand that age is not the only factor to chronic tendonitis. You read all the time about athletes suffering from tendonitis. There constant repetitive motion is a strain on the tendons.

Here are just a few examples of athletes that can develop chronic tendonitis. Even though some feel that golfers are not really athletes they are at risk as well as baseball players swinging the bat all the time and also having to throw the ball so hard. These motions are stressing the tendons in the elbows, shoulders and hands. These tendons over time weaken and then inflammation and pain occur.

Some people that suffer from chronic tendonitis probably could have avoided getting this problem by just doing some proper stretching and warm up prior to doing the activity By not warming up and stretching properly put added strain on the tendons and this will lead to tearing and or rupture of the tendon. Once this happens the treatment options are greatly reduced.

How to Deal with Chronic Tendonitis

The pain that comes with tendonitis varies from mild to extremely severe. The earlier you catch it and recognize that you have tendonitis the better your chances of not causing a major problem. Some of the treatments are as follows:

Ibuprofen and rest…If there is an area that is inflamed and painful, stop the activity. Give these tendons a chance to heal with ibuprofen and rest. Sometimes you can use the topical treatments as well, by rubbing the creams directly into the effected body part for immediate pain relief.

Anti-inflammatory drugs…When the pain becomes severe the doctor may prescribe anti-inflammatory drugs to reduce the swelling and inflammation. Once you start to get the inflammation down the reduction in pain level will reduce also.

Stretching…This is recommended often as a cure. You need to stretch in order to keep the joints flexible. If this is done properly chronic tendonitis is less likely to occur.

Cortisone treatment….Chronic tendonitis can become extremely severe and when this happens, sometimes the doctor will inject cortisone into the effected area. The relief is immediate, but it does not come with risks. These Corticosteroids have been known to weaken the immune system. The injection site area can also become infected.

What is important is that the tendons are given time to heal. If continued use happens, severe tendon injury can occur. When this happen surgery may be the only way to relieve the pain. This is really the last step to chronic tendonitis. You will use this option if all the other options do not relieve the pain. You must allow the tendon time to heal or you are risking serious problems.

Avoiding Chronic Tendonitis

The best way to avoid chronic tendonitis is to take steps to avoid the activity which can cause the condition. If this is not possible, then make sure that you stretch prior to the activity. Warm up stretching is necessary even before you exercise. Try changing your exercise routine to something low impact.

When you start to feel pain and see swelling happening, apply ice to the area that is inflamed. Most of all stop the activity immediately. If you continue to use this inflamed area and do not allow it time to heal you are going to develop chronic tendonitis and the pain and inflammation will just get worse with each use. You may have to modify your activity a little, but this is going to help. You will prevent major tendon damage and pain over the long term.
