Chicago White Sox - From First to Worst in Less Than 24 Months

Post on Sep 30th 2008

Its hard to believe that the Chicago White Sox were the 2005 World Champions, topping all other clubs in the majors.
Today, as I gazed at the standings, less than two full seasons later, theyre in dead last in the Central Division, beneath the perennially poor performers, the Kansas City Royals.

The good news is that the Sox are a mere four games out of fourth place. They still have a fighting chance to stave off the shame of becoming cellar dwellers during the off-season.
But theyre not fighting.
With much of September yet to play, theres little life left in the South Siders.

Foolishly, owner Jerry Reinsdorf has reiterated his support for wacky manager Ozzie Guillen, who is on record for having said he doesnt want players to be leaders in the dugout. Perhaps that solves the mystery regarding the trades of Frank Thomas, Carl Everett, and Aaron Rowand, soon after the team won the championship in 2005.

They had too much fire in the belly, too much leadership capability. They wouldnt lay down and die, as the Sox have done in 2006 and especially this year, when they all but phoned in their performances since the All-Star break.
In separate articles I predicted the Sox were entering, minimally a five year slump that could stretch to ten.

It looks like a lock that theyll certainly miss post-season play for the next 24-36 months if they keep in place their present management, along with their take-it-as-it-comes philosophy.
In the meantime, manager Lou Pinella and the Cubs new owners have been showing what some fresh blood and a new outlook can achieve on the North Side.

Maybe its time for Reinsdorf to sell?

If you live in or near Chicago, then you are probably aware that there is nothing like a Chicago pizza. You cannot just call any pizza a Chicago pizza because it is made in a special way. Carlos Zambrano
One of the best pitchers in the league this season has been Carlos Zambrano of the Chicago Cubs. Even without great run support, Zambrano has been able to get the job done time and time again. This is saying a lot for a guy that is pitching for a team that has been out of the playoff race for quite a few months. At only 25 years old Zambrano is one ...

Chicago Cubs Handicapping: 2006 Season Preview

Joe Crede Opts For Rehab Instead Of Surgery
Joe Crede, the White Sox third baseman, has opted for a six to eight week rehab program instead of surgery for the two herniated discs in his back. Till a few days ago, there was a lot of speculation that Crede might go for microsurgery. However, that has now been cleared. White Sox general manager Ken Williams informed through an email statem...

Yanks Beat Sox: How Sweep It Is!
The New York Yankees finished up a sweep of the defending World Series Champions, Chicago White Sox, with a 6-4 victory on a Sunday afternoon in the Bronx. Jaret Wright provided 5.1 innings of decent pitching, allowing 3 ER and 8 H, while walking 2 and striking out 1. It certainly wasnt a performance remotely similar to his outing prior to the Al...

Biggio Set For 3000 Hits

Post on Sep 29th 2008

Houston Atros has signed Craig Biggio, the second baseman, for a one year contract worth $5.15 million. This contract has paved way for Biggio to reach the 3000 landmark. Biggio needs only 70 hits to become the first Astro to reach 3,000 hits. He will become the 27th player in history when he reaches the milestone hits.

This might be the last contract for Craig Biggio who is 41 years old. However, he has not commented on that and has left the door open to return in 2008 season by commenting that he does not know whether it would be his last season.

Biggio will be setting a record of some sorts when he starts the next season. He has been playing for the Astros for 20 Major League season. It is envisaged that Biggio should reach the 3,000 milestone sometime late June or early July next year.

However, achieving the 3,000 hits is not the most important goal for Biggio. He wants to Astros back into contention next season which he says is his number one priority. His number two goal is get the 3,000 hits which he says is not only important for him but for his family and the people of Houston. He says this would be his way of saying thank you to his family and fans for supporting him for so many years.

This contract negotiation took longer than expected because of the money issue. However, now that it has been inked, Biggio and his family, the club owner Drayton McLane and the general manager Tim Purpura were all smiles at the announcement session with two dozen children from the charity Sunshine Kids that Biggio supports.

How to Calculate Slugging Percentage
What is Slugging Percentage? As the term implies, slugging percentage is baseballs way of measuring a hitters overall power and effectiveness. What I Know And Remember About Baseball - Soft Hands

Post on Sep 29th 2008

All too often baseball players perfect the art of collecting the ball in the pocket of their gloves. This is particularly true for the younger players that are still in the learning curve of using two hands for all catches. An expertly broken in glove will assist in the catching of the ball. Yet relying on the glove to perform all the functions of the catch is just too risky.

The addition of the second hand will help in the control of the baseballs energy but even then a missed alignment can cause the path of the baseball to take just enough geometry to find its way out of the glove. Again, the scramble for control is on.

With predictable proper control during the catch, the rhythm of taking the baseball from the glove and completing the throw action is guaranteed a higher level of success. Repeating a series of events developed through practices and drills is what delivers the baseball from the player who caught the ball to the player who needs to receiver the following throw.

Soft hands allow the baseball player fielding the ball to transfer the energy of the ball into the players arms. The action is similar to that of a shock absorber found in automobiles and motorcycles. Starting fast and out front with the initial contact, then retreating the hands quickly to dissipate the energy put into the baseball from being struck by the baseball bat.

To impart this motion to beginning and younger players, simply toss a ball in the air and let them catch it bare handed. Done correctly, the player will reach for the ball then withdraw their hands to their chest as they grasp it. This an easy catch and the ball will not bounce out of their hands nor will there be any sting.

Once the mechanics of the previous drill are taken to heart, it is time to move onto using the same technique in a fielding drill. Knees bent, bottom down, hands out, the players receive the ball with the same arm action as the over head drill but with grounders provided by the coach. Glove hand takes the line of the ball, off hand covers the ball in the glove, arms retreat quickly to dissipate the energy of the ball.

A key element in the proper use of the soft hands is the position of the baseball glove prior to receiving the baseball. Correct fielding places the glove in a vertical position with heal of the glove at the top and the web on the bottom.

When the glove is less than perpendicular to the path of the ball, any mishap is the fielding process can cause the ball to bounce away and behind the player. Recovery from these events are difficult as the player must turn their back on the field of play and operate under a sense of urgency.

With the glove at a right angle to the path of the ball, mistakes will cause the ball to bounce in front of the player, still within their vision and still playable.

Practice gloves (also known as training mitts, gloves and pancakes) are an excellent tool for both coaches and players. As they have no pocket, two hands are mandatory to field any baseball. An excellent way to reinforce the use of two hands in all catches. These mitts can also be used for drill with pop fly balls with limited height. It is a great policy for coaches to utilize drills that mandate two hands whenever possible.

For the coach training mitts offer the visual cue of the proper hand position and arm action. If the coach can see a full circle outline of the mitt during the drill, then the player is holding the mitt at a right angle as they should. Any oblique circle is a sure sign that the mitt is being held on an angle where the coach can make instant position correction. Balls controlled by the players indicate that they are using soft hands. When the ball bounces away from the mitt then the player is instantly notified of their mistake.

Soft hands is the process of using two hands to catch and control the ball by allowing the hands to retreat quickly as the ball is grasped, as the energy is dissipated, the ball can no longer bounce out of the glove and the player will gain control of the baseball faster and allow them to complete their motion in practiced, predictable way.

Baseball Drills for Youth Teams

Post on Sep 29th 2008

Baseball is a game of skill and power that is unlike any other game today. Baseball has subtly to it that is often lost in other team sports such as basketball and football. So when people come together to play this game they need to be ready for any eventuality no matter how unlikely it maybe. That is why baseball drills are so important. Practicing these different scenarios keeps players from being unprepared for what may happen during a game which is very important. Here are a few drills that teach players both the fundamentals and some of the more important drills that can help teams with their weaknesses.

A good drill for all around practice is ironically called the All Around drill. This is an excellent baseball drill to teach kids to stop the ball and how to throw in and out of field. It starts with lining up players in groups of three to four at first base, right field, and third base. Each group has a different job, the first base players try to run from first base to third without being tagged and then must slide into third base. As the player runs a coach throws a ball to the right field players. This gives them an opportunity to practice stopping the ball. Then the right fielder throws the ball low to the third base players. The third base players then need to and tag the player that ran. Its a slightly complicated drill but a good one for those that want to make sure that players are familiar with the basics of field play.

Another good drill is called The Fence drill. This is another excellent baseball hitting drill. This drill calls for a player to be standing behind some sort of solid wall; it can be made of chain link, cement, or even brink. The important thing is that the player can tell the difference between when they have touched the wall and when they have not. Have the player make their normal stance and stand about a 1-1 feet in front of the wall. Then have the player practice their hitting style, if they continually hit the wall that means that they must tighten their stance. This will in turn help them with a quicker bat swing. Just remind your players that this drill is not about power but precision that way they wont hurt themselves or the bat when they swing to far back and hit the wall.

Finally, a good creative drill to keep players practicing at home has many names but one can either be called rooftop ball or error depending on what players have heard it called. This is a simple drill that does a good job of practicing both fielding, throwing, and stopping the ball. At home, a player throws a ball down their slanted roof and tries to catch it after it rolls down. There is more than a slight chance of a gutter ball but it still does a great job of helping players at home practice in a creative way.

These different baseball drills will help players become much better rounded and in turn that will lead to better games. Baseball is a subtle art but much like an artist if a player has experience behind them it is more likely that they will be successful.

Batting Order Ideas For Little League Teams
Over my 18 years coaching youth baseball, Ive toyed with different batting order ideas, both to be competitive and to be fair to the players. Lets explore the competitive side first. MLB Baseball History

Post on Sep 28th 2008

No one knows for sure where baseball exacted originated. However, most baseball buffs will concur that the sport is based on the English game of rounders. In the United States, baseball became popular in the early 1800s, originally known as townball. At a later date, the sport was renamed baseball. Throughout this period of time, smaller communities formed teams, while larger cities formed leagues.

There is some question as to who was the original founder of the rules of baseball. Some contend that Alexander Cartwright in 1845 published a list of rules which are still in place today. However, others contend that it was Abner Doubleday who invented the game. However, most baseball historians believe Alexander Cartwright indeed originated baseball.

The first ever recorded baseball duel was played in 1846 between Alexander Cartwrights Knickerbockers who play against the New York Baseball Club. The Knickerbockers lost the game at the Elysian Fields, in Hoboken, New Jersey.

In 1857, a meeting has held and over 25 amateur teams from the Northeast clamored together to hash out rules among other things. The next year, the National Association of Base Ball Players was formed and the teams, needing financial assistance to support the league, intermittently charged the fans an admission fee.

The 1860s brought about the Civil War and the interest in baseball, understandably, diminished. After the war, baseballs popularity began to grown better than ever. The leagues growth resulted in fans being charged a regular admission fee to watch games. The fees were needed to support the league and the ongoing traveling. Winning became important. Although the league was comprised of amateurs, sponsors occasionally paid the players secretly so that the amateur players wouldnt leave the team. The idea of paid players eventually became the norm. Today, baseball is one of North Americas favorite sports.

The King of Denial

Post on Sep 28th 2008

If I had to take a guess regarding the type of person Barry Bonds is, I would presume he is the type of person who subscribes to the notion that if a tree falls in the woods and nobody is around to hear it, then it does not make a sound. Based on Barrys latest antics yesterday this clearly must be the case. In a new book titled Game of Shadows: Barry Bonds, Balco and the Steroids Scandal That Rocked Professional Sports, the authors (Mark Fainaru-Wada and Lance Williams) offer thousands of documents, interviews, and secret grand jury testimony of Bonds and other athletes involved in the Balco case, which prove to me and anyone else who considers themselves reasonable that Barry Bonds has been taking steroids since the end of the 1998 season. The authors were also provided with several taped recordings that were given to them by Barry Bonds mistress and which point to his steroid use. I know that seems hard to believe, Bonds being the great family man and all, but lets say for the sake of argument that this so called mistress really exists and perhaps accept the fact that Bonds is just a bold faced liar and self-righteous hypocrite.

What is Bonds answer to all of this? When asked what he thought of this new book and the excerpts that were featured in this months Sports Illustrated, Bonds acted like it was news to him, and said I wont even look at it. For what? Theres no need to. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, Barry, but if a tree falls in the woods and nobody is around to hear it, it does in fact still make a sound. And if a book about your strict regiment of injecting yourself with illegal steroids is written, and you are not around to read it, the book does in fact still exist. Unfortunately for you there will still be people in those woods who will gladly take the time to read all about you, even if you insist on burying your head in the sand or hiding behind one of your children at a press conference. Sadly those are the same children who now know the all-to-sad truth about Barrys unfaithfulness to his wife, his family, his teammates, and the game of baseball.

Jacked Up Baseball Equipment Truths!

Post on Sep 27th 2008

Baseball: the great all-American pastime. Few of us can remember a summer from our childhood that did not include throwing a ball around or running the diamond. Today, baseball is all of that and much more. Baseball equipment has become as advanced as the space stationwell, maybe not that advanced, but it is certainly more complicated than when we were kids! The point is baseball is not just a game anymore.

A few years ago, you grabbed your wooden bat and baseball and headed to the park for a game. However, the days of wooden bats are over (at least in the unprofessional realm of the sport). Today, everything is alloy and not just aluminum either. Boasting magnesium, scandium, and even titanium, the bats of today are far more advanced than their predecessors but the advancement in technology does not stop there. Many new bats on the market offer graphite cores and even two-piece bats to eliminate vibration.

When it comes to advancements in baseball equipment technology, gloves were not left out. Once simply made of leather, the old fashioned kind made from cows, many gloves on the market are now available in buffalo, kangaroo, and pigskin, not to mention the numerous grades of cow and steer hide offered. The major differences in each type of hide is the softness and durability of the material, which determines the amount of time necessary to break it in and, of course, how long the glove lasts.

To the best of my knowledge, luckily, baseballs have not changed much over the years. Unless there is a square ball out there I am unaware of, the balls of the past are still used to play the game today.

With all of the advances in baseball equipment, is it any wonder records are constantly being broken? If the tools really do make the man, baseball equipment should be producing superstars, as that is the technology form which they come.

One of The Best Baseball Ever Saw: Roger Alan McDowell

Post on Sep 23rd 2008

All baseball players need not necessarily be good coaches and vice versa. However in the case of Roger Alan McDowell, the former is true. While talent, hard work, right grooming, burning ambition, and good amount of luck are the factors required to make a celebrity player, the team spirit, proper mix of talents, and leadership, makes a team. The latter faculties are put into use by the players off the ground as well as a coach to produce the best talents in the chosen field.

Rogan Alan McDowell was born on December 21, 1960 in Cincinnati. He represented the Major League Baseball for 12 consecutive seasons from the year 1985 to the year 1996. He partnered with the well-known teams of the league including the New York Mets, the Philadelphia Phillies and the Los Angeles Dodgers. His association with the American League was with the Texas Rangers and Baltimore Orioles. Few would forget the grace and movements of this player-turned- coach during the colorful days of his career.

This class player, a product of Bowling Green State University, who bats and throws right made his debut in the Major League on April 11, 1985 in the Final Game. The eleven years of his active playing career was known for the commitment and dedication this player exhibited throughout, irrespective of the team with which he partnered. His farewell game was on August 14, 1996 in his final game of the Major League.

The Atlanta Braves hired this player as a pitching coach for their team in October 2005, an incident thus replacing Leo Mazzone. A player well known and a mentor and coach matured, and committed McDowell was known to wear Kilts off the field. Many a record is waiting to be bettered by his staff in the coming years under his stewardship in the Atlanta Braves.

New Ball Parks

Post on Sep 23rd 2008

Do you ever wonder how fans got by in the old baseball stadiums? They were made of all concrete and had little substance or style to them. But in todays day the ball parks are bigger and better than ever before. Not only do they cater to the players, but the fans also get a great atmosphere as well; and isnt this what baseball is all about.

Even though there are some older ball parks left in the league, the majority of teams are moving into the new, updated parks. And believe it or not, these ball parks have a lot to do with how many fans come to the games, as well as what type of players they can attract. When it comes down to it a top quality stadium has much more appeal than simply looking better.

It is safe to say that within the next ten years all of the older ball parks are going to be on their way out. But the funny thing is that by that time some of the newer parks of today will be getting older. For this reason there is always an ever changing atmosphere when it comes to major league baseball ball parks. But this is a good thing; it helps to keep the game fresh at all times.

Overall, the newer ball parks that some of todays teams play in are unbelievable. If you compare these stadiums to the ones of the past there is no competition. Todays stadiums win hands down.

Baseball Tradition

Post on Sep 22nd 2008

Baseball holds a special place in the hearts of many Americans. Regardless of the international appeal of the sport, the United States sees it as a favorite pastime. From street games of stickball or afternoons playing catch in the backyard to professional Minor Leagues and Major League Baseball, people of all ages love this sport.

Baseball comes in so many forms, aiming to please children of all ages. After all, what other career in the known universe pays a person to play a childrens game? Young children who are just beginning to build up hand-eye coordination and are learning to work and a team can sign up for Tee Ball, where the ball is set on a tee with an adjustable height to accommodate the player and no pitcher is present. There also is the the tethered baseball which you can hook up to a tree and hit it for hours. This allows a more older child to hit a ball in motion.

The basic rules of baseball can be learned early on, and children can start a hobby that will keep them healthy and out of trouble for years to come. Most kids join little leagues and families join in on the weekly events.
