Chicago White Sox - From First to Worst in Less Than 24 Months
Post on Sep 30th 2008
Its hard to believe that the Chicago White Sox were the 2005 World Champions, topping all other clubs in the majors. Today, as I gazed at the standings, less than two full seasons later, theyre in dead last in the Central Division, beneath the perennially poor performers, the Kansas City Royals.
The good news is that the Sox are a mere four games out of fourth place. They still have a fighting chance to stave off the shame of becoming cellar dwellers during the off-season. But theyre not fighting. With much of September yet to play, theres little life left in the South Siders.
Foolishly, owner Jerry Reinsdorf has reiterated his support for wacky manager Ozzie Guillen, who is on record for having said he doesnt want players to be leaders in the dugout. Perhaps that solves the mystery regarding the trades of Frank Thomas, Carl Everett, and Aaron Rowand, soon after the team won the championship in 2005.
They had too much fire in the belly, too much leadership capability. They wouldnt lay down and die, as the Sox have done in 2006 and especially this year, when they all but phoned in their performances since the All-Star break. In separate articles I predicted the Sox were entering, minimally a five year slump that could stretch to ten.
It looks like a lock that theyll certainly miss post-season play for the next 24-36 months if they keep in place their present management, along with their take-it-as-it-comes philosophy. In the meantime, manager Lou Pinella and the Cubs new owners have been showing what some fresh blood and a new outlook can achieve on the North Side.
Maybe its time for Reinsdorf to sell?

Chicago Pizza is a Whole New Experience
If you live in or near Chicago, then you are probably aware that there is nothing like a Chicago pizza. You cannot just call any pizza a Chicago pizza because it is made in a special way. To put it simply, this type of pizza is a deep dish. Now, Im not talking about the stuff Pizza Hut calls deep dish. I mean that this pizza is really deep! This pi...
Carlos Zambrano
One of the best pitchers in the league this season has been Carlos Zambrano of the Chicago Cubs. Even without great run support, Zambrano has been able to get the job done time and time again. This is saying a lot for a guy that is pitching for a team that has been out of the playoff race for quite a few months. At only 25 years old Zambrano is one ...

Manny Ramirez, the Boston left fielder, won his ninth Silver Slugger on November 10, 2006. Along with Ramirez there were thirteen first time winners. Derek Jeter, shortstop for New York Yankees, and Carlos Beltran, center fielder for New York Mets, were among the first time winners. Silver Slugger award is given to top offensive player at each...
2006 Kansas City Royals Preview
2005 Overview:Ask any Royal fan and they will tell you - there just simply werent many things for them to cheer about in 2005. In fact, the 2005 Kansas City Royals were a complete train wreck and thats putting things somewhat mildly. The Royals managed to win a total of only 56 games the entire year while losing an embarrassing 106. The anemic Roya...
Chicago Cubs Handicapping: 2006 Season Preview
The Cubs are expected to win the World Series every year. So I exaggerated it but Cubs fans have their hopes and dreams set on this team every year and the team always stinks it up. They are consistenly overvalued by 13 points over the past 7 seasons. Betting against them is MONEY.Since betting odds in baseball have a lot to do with pitching, the p...
Joe Crede Opts For Rehab Instead Of Surgery
Joe Crede, the White Sox third baseman, has opted for a six to eight week rehab program instead of surgery for the two herniated discs in his back. Till a few days ago, there was a lot of speculation that Crede might go for microsurgery. However, that has now been cleared. White Sox general manager Ken Williams informed through an email statem...
Yanks Beat Sox: How Sweep It Is!
The New York Yankees finished up a sweep of the defending World Series Champions, Chicago White Sox, with a 6-4 victory on a Sunday afternoon in the Bronx. Jaret Wright provided 5.1 innings of decent pitching, allowing 3 ER and 8 H, while walking 2 and striking out 1. It certainly wasnt a performance remotely similar to his outing prior to the Al...
