PPC and How You Can Benefit From It - Your Guide to Search Engine PPC
Post on Jun 20th 2008
Being an online marketer for over seven years, I had heard the term Pay Per Click, or PPC often during that time.
Many times it was in relation to PPC ads ran through small sites, almost like manual surf, or through emails that proposed paying the reader less than a cent each to click the URL in the ad.
PPC these days hold a whole new meaning. Using PPC with search engines can be a costly, yet effective means of gaining traffic as well as making a bit of cash, IF you know how to utilize the service.
Im not going to say that you need a masters degree in order to use PPC services of a search engine, but you had best do a lot of research, or you will lose more money than you care to, and it will happen almost immediately.
What exactly is PPC? When anyone goes to a search engine, and does a search for information they are interested in, the results will come up on the page, and they will click the ones they are interested in learning about.
Many people have paid the search engines to send traffic to their site, by clicking on their ad that will come up for a particular keyword, for a better click thru rate. For example, if you are a website graphics artist, one of your keywords may be graphics. When someone would search the word graphics, your ad would come up on the first page or two. They see your ad, and click on it, to get to your website; you will pay the cost for that ad being clicked on due to the keyword searched.
PPC is a type of search marketing where advertisers pay a set amount every time their ad is clicked by a prospect. This is known as a click thru, click through rate or ctr.
Your goal with PPC is to place your ad, in front of the prospective customer, at just the right moment when they are searching for that product or service.
PPC allows you to decide how much you are willing to pay per customer, per click thru. The only viewers you pay for are those that are actively seeking your product or service.
Contextual ads are another means of PPC. You know the ones, the little boxes on the page with small ads in them, which you click when it shows any subject you may be interested in.
The PPC business can be overwhelming, if you are not educated on how to use the service. One of the huge benefits of this service is the cost effectiveness, and the ability to geo target your audience to your website, due to their own searches.
The extensive growth of the PPC industry has increased the demand as such, it can become quite expensive. You must research your keywords, and compare them to find out, if they are keywords that are in demand, and will there be too much competition for them, where you will not profit.
When PPC first began, you could set up a campaign for mere pennies per keyword. This is not the case today. Some keywords can easily run over a dollar per click. You must be very careful when choosing your keywords, and knowing how much you can afford to pay. It is so easy to lose hundreds of dollars per day now. I know a couple of marketers online who spend approximately $200 a day in PPC, and their expenditures are actually considered to be low in some marketers eyes.
Another thing you want to analyze is the ratio of clicks per sales. Just because you are getting thousands of clicks does not mean you are getting thousands of sales. Do the math, and make sure that your clicks are paying for themselves and creating a profit margin for you.
If your keyword only puts you on the second or third page, that is ok. Many people will search two or three pages, but no more than that. So you can many times go from paying over a dollar per word, to about half of what you would originally pay, to get the same visitors.
So you see, PPC can bring a massive amount of visitors to your website, targeted visitors, but, it is quite a competitive market and can become quite costly. Do your research! Success comes from knowing the amount you are willing to pay, will bring the results you need. Test the service before committing large sums of money for it.
Be sure that you can monitor the results before agreeing to use the service. This information is valuable to your financial goals, as well as letting you know which products and services are more in demand than others, thus allowing you to define your advertising plan to its fullest potential.
Until next time, keep reaching for success, as you just might get it!
