Preserving Information for Times to Come

Post on Sep 30th 2008

It is no longer possible to neglect the task of data storage in an enterprise. As a consequence of the explosion in the use of computers that has taken place over the last two decades, data storage has come to acquire a new meaning. In the old days, all data was stored on paper. The result was an excess of folders that took up space on desks, chairs, and file cabinets.

We still have folders and files in the world today. They have just become a lot more accessible. Rather than occupy space on the office furniture, these folders inhabit the storage space on our computers. The records that we utilize these days are categorized into hard copy and soft copy. These days, it is the latter that is fast taking over to become the most indispensable. However, the differently-colored folders and files that grace our offices cannot be ignored just yet.

As far as storing hard copy goes, the good old file cabinet is your best bet. Keep it organized from the very start and rest assured that files will be easily available. Maintain records of who uses which file and when, to diminish the probability that your records on hard copy will disappear.

However, storing soft copy requires a level of technical expertise. Computers, after all, are electronic products. Hence, they are at the mercy of electronic hitches of all kinds. From power surges due to electrical storms, to motherboards that are destroyed by a virus, data that is stored on your PC is at risk. If you are in an organization that has a lot of data stored on computers, minimizing the risk of data loss has to be taken care of at all costs.

This would require you to create a plan to recover your data, if for some reason, you lose your data. It is recommended to keep making backups of the stored data to diminish the chances of data getting lost.

Many a time, we take it upon ourselves to try and repair drives that give trouble. Avoid doing this as you might lose even more data. Instead of that, get an expert to come and take a look.

Enterprise storage is an important issue in most modern-day organizations. There are many modes of data protection that will be of help to you. One of the ways is that of using storage systems such as DAS, SAN and NAS. Of these, DAS (direct attached storage) is the oldest, though it continues to be popular. You could also avail of the various free data recovery software available in the online markets.

There are many ways of working on data storage. Decide which one works the best for you after evaluating the data requirements of your organization.
