Protecting Your Computer From a Storm
Post on Sep 18th 2008
If you consider that a Storm could be any disruption from your computer and/or data, the following two recommendations are best practices for protecting your valuable computer data.
Backing up your data
Did you back up your data today? When was the last time you tried to restore your data to ensure that the backup is working properly?
A backup solution is more than just copying your data to a second media. To be protected from data loss you should:
Have a backup schedule in place (preferably automated)
Have a location, regionally separated from your computer location, to store your backups
Regularly test your backups to ensure the reliability of the data
Remote backup is one way to accomplish your backup needs by sending your data to a remote server using you internet connection at off hours.
Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS)
In my experience, South Florida has a lot of power outages. Even brief flashes of the lights will shut down your computer. These shut downs can corrupt the operating system or lose data. Everyone should have a UPS. UPSs are inexpensive and will save you from a lot of trouble. A UPS does not need to provide long amounts of battery life; in fact a reasonably priced UPS will run approximately 10 minutes. The purpose of this device is to provide enough time to shut down your computer safely. With a good UPS, the shut down process can be automated.
Backup Generators
In the past years, many South Floridians have invested in backup generators. It is imperative that you connect a UPS between your generator and your computer. Generators produce power that can spike and surge, causing more damage to your computer than the power loss.
To protect your computer from a Storm, your backup solution should be setup, tested, and the data stored off site.
