Silver Slugger Awards

Manny Ramirez, the Boston left fielder, won his ninth Silver Slugger on November 10, 2006. Along with Ramirez there were thirteen first time winners. Derek Jeter, shortstop for New York Yankees, and Carlos Beltran, center fielder for New York Mets, were among the first time winners.

Silver Slugger award is given to top offensive player at each position and to designated hitter. This award is given annually by Hillerich & Bradsby Co., the maker of Louisville Slugger bats.

Robinson Cano, Yankees second baseman, and Jose Reyes, New York Mets shortstop, were amongst the first time winners of Silver Slugger Award. Vladamir Guerrero, Angels right fielder, won this award for the sixth time while David Ortiz, the designated hitter for Boston, won for the third time. Guerrero and Ortiz are winning this award consecutively in a row.

There are other first time winners in the AL like Justin Morneau, Minnesotas first baseman, Joe Mauer, Minnesotas catcher, Joe Crede, third baseman with Chicago White Sox, and Jermaine Dye, Chicago White Soxs right fielder. Alfonso Soriano, Washington left fielder, also won his first NL Silver Slugger along with Philadephias first baseman Ryan Howard and second baseman Chase Utley, Matt Holliday, Colorados left fielder, Brian McCann, Atlanta catcher and Carlos Zambrano, Chicago Cubs pitcher.

Manny Ramirez has won the Silver Slugger for eight consecutive seasons and is currently tied for third along with Barry Larkin in career Silver Sluggers. He is trailing Barry Bond who won 12 and Mike Piazza who won it 10 times.

Most of the players who won the award received substantial bonuses. The most notable being Jermaine Dye who received $15,000 and got a salary hike for 2007. His salary has been increased to $ 7 million!
