Spyware Protection When Using A Strange Computer

Most people forget about spyware protection when using a public computer. Yet you need to be much more careful with a strange computer than you would ordinarily be with your well-protected PC at home or in the office.

In fact if you are the sort of person who travels a lot, chances are pretty high that at some point you will find yourself using a computer at some cyber caf, library, airport or hotel. This is always bound to make you very vulnerable to spyware and other security issues related to your personal data.

To start with, you must avoid at all costs, accessing your online banking and credit card accounts. This is because there is a very high likelihood of public computers containing a specific kind of spyware/Trojan called "a key-logger" which records your every keystroke. This will allow thieves to get both your logins and passwords. Actually the thief will be able to access everything that you typed in during your session.

There is another precaution to protect you from spyware that you can take before you even leave. You can forward all emails from your usual account to a special one that you can set up specifically for your trip. Thus when you sit down at any public computer to access your email, you will be only using your temporary email account. This can go a long way in protecting your personal data.

Alternatively, you can change your password the first time you use your computer away from home. If you decide to do this, do remember to change your password again when you get home.

For security reasons, you should also prefer to use secure browsers like Firefox and Opera whether you are at home or using a public computer. You will be much less vulnerable to spyware than when using the common Internet explorer. It is critical that you always think how best to stay protected from spyware at all times.
